After we stumble back to the house, I grab onto the door handle and motion to Chris to be quiet by holding my index finger over my lips and making a very loud shushing noise. We both start to giggle like we’re fifteen again, sneaking into one of our houses after everyone’s asleep. All goes according to plan until I slip on my heel and I fall up the stairs. Luckily, Chris catches me, but we burst into fits of laughter. When we hear something coming from one of the rooms, we quickly race into our room and shut the door.

“That was a close one,” Chris says.

I’m not even thinking about my problems. All I can think about is Chris. I walked up to him, wrap my arms around him, and kiss him, rather hungrily, actually.

“Ow,” he says, “my tooth.”

“Sorry,” I say, still laughing. I try to kiss him again, but he says, “Jill, you told me you want to take it slow, and I want to respect that. You doing that—as much as I like it—doesn’t help.” He looks me up and down.

“I don’t care anymore,” I say, kissing him.

He pulls away. “But you do,” he says, “and I can’t take advantage.”

“I understand,” I say, feeling slightly embarrassed. “How about we just make out like we used to do at high school parties?”

He thinks for a second. “I’m okay with that.” He smiles.
